Anuradhapura Sri Lanka

Considered one of Sri Lanka’s oldest capitals, Anuradhapura lies in the heart of the island, bearing centuries of history and change. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, Anuradhapura was founded in the 4th century BC and remained the national capital until the early 9th century, making it one of the most stable kingdoms in all of Asia. Anuradhapura holds a special place in Buddhist culture. Among its temples and white stupas, the island’s first Buddhist philosophers studied and taught, especially after the royal court formally embraced Buddhism during the city’s final years as a kingdom. Today, visitors find a vast maze of ruins and historic sites that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The most notable are the so‑called Eight Great Places of Veneration, particularly the spectacular white Mirisaveti stupa—an iconic landmark of the city that draws thousands of pilgrims every day.
