Gijon, Spain

Gijon Spain

Gijon is a coastal city in the province of Asturias in northwest Spain. It is a dynamic, lively destination with numerous parks, sports facilities, and carefully restored historical and artistic landmarks. As one of the region’s most important cities, Gijon hosts fairs, conventions, concerts, and major cultural and sporting events. The Old Town lies near City Hall Square and spans several areas. In Marqués Square you’ll find the statue of King Pelayo and the elegant Revillagigedo Palace. This square is an ideal spot to enjoy a drink in one of its many bars and clubs. Cimadevilla, the old fishermen’s quarter, is full of small brightly painted houses, traditional cider bars, and nightclubs. Continuing up through Cimadevilla’s streets, you reach the Santa Catalina Highlands, where visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the city and port. Here stands one of Gijon’s most important landmarks, Eduardo Chillida’s sculpture “Elogio del Horizonte” (Eulogy to the Horizon). Gijon preserves remains of Roman settlements, such as the Campo Valdés baths, dating back to the 1st century AD, which are the largest preserved Roman baths in Spain. A popular holiday resort among Spaniards, Gijon offers a vibrant nightlife and cultural scene as well as attractive beaches.
